Based on traditional Korean and improvisational music, Black String aims to seek a new sound that can internalize a variety of musical expressions in traditional music and jazz, as well as harmonize with other expressions in world music. Black String attempts to create a unique language through Asian intuition and musical idiom. The group was founded in 2011 as part of “UK Connection,” a government-sponsored Korea-United Kingdom cultural exchange program.
The band consists of Yoon-jeong Heo (Geomungo – Korean stringed instrument of the zither family), Aram Lee (Daegum – large bamboo transverse flute, and Yanggeum – Korean stringed instrument, i.e. hammered dulcimer), and Jean Oh (jazz guitar). The band made its debut at Jarasum International Jazz Festival (South Korea) and London Jazz Festival (UK) in 2012, collaborating with UK artists Tim Garland, John Turville, Asaf Sirkis, and Gwilym Simcock. The group performs at many world-renowned festivals and venues. Black String’s creative use of the amplified sound of a Geomungo, the fierce quake of Korean traditional percussion, and the unpredictable melody of jazz guitar will grasp all your senses!
