About the Show
The New York Public Library recently began a program of releasing classic novels on Instagram to make them more accessible in the world of social media. The first book this esteemed organization chose to release in this very modern way was Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll’s confounding book was first published in 1865 and has never been out of print. It’s staying power is a testament to its brilliance and generational appeal. Children will recognize timeless characters like Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and the Tweedles. Adults will follow Alice on her whimsical journey of nonsense and try to figure out the puns, riddles, and puzzles. There have been many interpretations of Carroll’s masterpiece ranging from classic rock songs to Disney cartoons to Tim Burton films. This adaptation by Eva Galliene and Florida Freibus, originally performed in 1932 and revived on Broadway in 1982, is true to both books (Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) and combines them into an illogical, wondrous, joyful adventure.
