SUMMARY:One Night In Memphis
DESCRIPTION:  \nBuy Tickets \nMain Stage\nOrchestra $49\, Mezzanine $44\ninclusive of ticket fee \n \nAbout One Night in Memphis\nOne Night in Memphis is a rocking concert tribute to legendary Sun Records recording artists Carl Perkins\, Johnny Cash\, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Over 90 minutes of rockabilly\, country\, gospel\, and pure 1950s rock and roll music performed live and backed by an authentic and energetic rockabilly backup band. Created and directed by John Mueller from the highly acclaimed show\, “Winter Dance Party\,” this show has met with the same accolades\, sell-out shows\, and audience standing ovations. \nBe a witness to a rock and roll royalty jam session with the music and talent that has stood the test of time. Enjoy true American music featuring the hits “Blue Suede Shoes\,” “Folsom Prison Blues\,” “Great Balls of Fire\,” “Whole lotta Shaking Going On\,” “Shake\, Rattle and Roll\,” “Don’t Be Cruel\,” “Hound Dog\,” and many\, many more with acclaimed national talent\, all performed live without tracks and guaranteed to get any audience rocking and rolling! \n \nHistory\nOn December 4th\, 1956\, music history was made. This date found Carl Perkins\, Johnny Cash\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, and Elvis Presley together at Sun Record’s studio in Memphis\, TN. A jam session ensued\, which seemed to have happened by chance. Perkins\, who by this time had already met success with “Blue Suede Shoes”\, had come into the studio that day\, accompanied by his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland\, to cut some new material\, including a revamped version of an old blues song\, “Matchbox”. Sam Phillips\, the owner of Sun Records\, who wished to try to fatten this sparse rockabilly instrumentation\, had brought in his latest acquisition\, singer\, and piano man extraordinaire Jerry Lee Lewis\, still unknown outside Memphis\, to play piano on the Perkins session. \nSometime in the early afternoon\, Elvis Presley\, a former Sun artist himself but now at RCA\, dropped in to pay a casual visit. At the time\, he was the biggest name in show business\, having hit the top of the singles charts five times and topped the album charts twice in the preceding 12-month period. Less than four months earlier\, he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show\, pulling an unheard-of 83% of the television audience\, estimated at 55 million\, the largest in history up to that time. \nAfter chatting with Philips in the control room\, Presley listened to the playback of Perkins’ session\, which he pronounced to be good. Then he went out into the studio\, and the jam session began sometime later. Sun artist Johnny Cash\, who had recently enjoyed a few hits on the country charts\, popped in at some point during the session. Cowboy Jack Clement was engineering that day and remembers saying to himself\, “I think I’d be remiss not to record this\,” So he did\, and the night became rock and roll music history. Many famous artists\, such as Bob Dylan\, recall listening to and being tremendously inspired by these recordings. \nShare This:

SUMMARY:Tracy Nelson featuring Steve Conn
DESCRIPTION:  \nBuy Tickets \nGia Maione Prima Foundation Studio Theatre\nTickets $24\ninclusive of ticket fee \n \nAbout the show\nFor this intimate acoustic performance\, Tracy Nelson will be accompanied by Steve Conn\, one of the two pianists on the recent Grammy-nominated album “Life Don’t Miss Nobody.” Conn will also bring his small accordion to accompany Tracy when she switches to a 12-string acoustic guitar. \nAbout Tracy Nelson\nTracy Nelson\, one of the most powerful voices in American music\, has emerged from a lengthy recording hiatus with the album of a lifetime\, a musical self-portrait spanning her entire career. Life Don’t Miss Nobody  (BMG; release date June 9th) is a 13 track collection that stretches back to her start as a guitar-picking Wisconsin teen playing coffeehouses through an unparalleled career\, now in it’s sixth decade\, singing blues\, country\, New Orleans R&B and gospel\, and performing in such storied music meccas as 1960s San Francisco and 1970s Austin in her epic\, genre-busting musical journey. \nBut this is no nostalgia trip. The title song is a brand-new composition from the woman whose “Down So Low” has become a modern standard. She’s kept busy performing and recording with long-time musical friends in projects like Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues and with the freewheeling all-star Blues Broads – Angela Strehli\, Annie Sampson and Dorothy Morrison. Even so\, roots lovers have waited a long time for a new Tracy Nelson album\, and no one’s more excited than Tracy. \n \n“I haven’t made a record in over 10 years\,” she says. “I’ve been wanting to do every one of these songs for a really long time. I wanted to get a little bit of everything\, all the kinds of music that I love.” \nLife Don’t Miss Nobody is Tracy Nelson’s own Great American Songbook\, featuring iconic composers like Hank Williams\, Ma Rainey\, Willie Dixon\, Allen Toussaint\, Chuck Berry\, Doc Pomus\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Founding Father of  American Song\, Stephen Foster. Foster’s “Hard Times” in here in two settings\, both featuring Tracy on 12 string\, the first time she’s recorded on guitar since her 1964 debut\, Deep Are The Roots. \nTracy’s labor of love includes the album’s personnel. Produced by Roger Alan Nichols (Steven Tyler\, Larkin Poe) and tracked at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in just three days\, Life Don’t Miss Nobody features the state-of-the-art roots rhythm section of piano masters Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton\, Brian Setzer) and Steve Conn (Bonnie Raitt\, Sonny Landreth)\, upright and electric bassist Byron House (Robert Plant’s Band of Joy\, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band)\, Nashville A-list drummer John Gardner (Dixie Chicks\, Taylor Swift)\, Larry Chaney (Edwin McCain) and Mike Henderson (SteelDrivers\, Chris Stapleton) on guitars. \nAbout Steve Conn\nSteve Conn has played piano\, organ\, or accordion with Bonnie Raitt\, Shemekia Copeland\, Kris Kristofferson\, Dion\, Kenny Loggins and a multitude of others. As a session keyboardist he has played on 12 Grammy-nominated albums\, including Tracy Nelson’s Life Don’t Miss Nobody in 2024 and Sonny Landreth’s 2017 live album\, Recorded Live in Lafayette\, on which he plays accordion\, piano and organ\, and is featured singing his song “The One and Only Truth.” \nHe was a New Folk Finalist at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival\, he’s had his music played onOprah and CSI\, and for two years he was the musical director for eTown on National Public Radio. \nHe’s a master songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s toured Europe with legendary bluesman Albert King\, played on “The Tonight Show” with acclaimed vocalist Shelby Lynne\, and joined rock ’n’ roll icon Levon Helm onstage at the famed Ryman Auditorium. \nSteve’s music reflects the depth and diversity of his Louisiana roots. Part funky bluesman\, part soulful popster\, he draws on his love of Southern literature to craft “tunes that infuse intriguing stories and characters with a depth of melody and musicianship that makes clear why Conn is in such demand.” (Dirty Linen) \nHis first national release was the critically acclaimed River of Madness\, a unique hybrid of\nLouisiana-influenced\, pop-inspired deep grooves and high ideals. He released Steve Conn in 2003\, featuring the classic “I’ve Got Your Dog” and the heartbreaking “Beautiful\,” later recorded by soul icon Bonnie Bramlett. \nIn 2011 he came out with Beautiful Dream\, 12 exquisitely crafted songs full of questions and observations about loss and innocence\, hope and regret\, cynicism and optimism. \nHe continues weaving those lyrical threads on 2019’s Flesh and Bone\, which is full of rootsy grooves\, incisive lyrics\, imaginative production and unforgettable songs. \n  \n \n  \nThis event is made possible through the generous support of the Gia Maione Prima Foundation \nShare This:

SUMMARY:Viet Thanh Nguyen
DESCRIPTION:  \nBuy Tickets \nMain Stage\nTickets Free\,\nAdvanced Registration Required \n \nSchedule\nThe 11:00 am event is open to the public. The 11:00 am event will also be livestreamed. \nAt 12:30 pm\, an informal Q&A will be held for OCC Students\, Faculty\, and staff. Registration with an OCC email address is required for this session. \nAbout Viet Thanh Nguyen\nViet Thanh Nguyen’s writing is bold\, elegant\, and fiercely honest. His remarkable debut novel\, The Sympathizer\, won the Pulitzer Prize\, was a Dayton Literary Peace Prize winner\, and made the finalist list for the PEN/Faulkner award. \nViet and his family came to the United States as refugees during the Vietnam War in 1975. As he grew up in America\, he began to notice that most movies and books about  the war focused on Americans while the Vietnamese were silenced and erased. He was inspired by this lack of representation to write about the war from a Vietnamese perspective\, globally reimagining what we thought we knew about the conflict. The New York Times says that his novel\, The Sympathizer\, “fills a void…giving voice to the previously voiceless while it compels the rest of us to look at the events of forty years ago in a new light.” His voice is refreshing and powerful as he urges readers to examine the legacy of that tumultuous time and its aftermath from a new perspective. The audacious novel has also been described by The Guardian as having a “Whitman- like multiplicity” as it “reads like the absolute opposite of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried.” The Committed\, the long-awaited follow-up to The Sympathizer\, was published in 2021 and has been called “a masterwork” and “revelatory.” \nViet’s book Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War was a finalist for the National Book Award. Author Ari Kelman praises Nothing Ever Dies saying it\, “provides the fullest and best explanation of how the Vietnam War has become so deeply inscribed into national memory.” His collection of short stories\, The Refugees\, explores questions of immigration\, identity\, love\, and family. In 2018\, Viet called on 17 fellow refugee writers from across the globe to shed light on their experiences\, and the result is The Displaced\, a powerful dispatch from the individual lives behind current headlines\, with proceeds to support the International Rescue Committee. \nViet was the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant. The MacArthur foundation noted that Viet’s work “not only offers insight into the experiences of refugees past and present\, but also poses profound questions about how we might more accurately and conscientiously portray victims and adversaries of other wars.” Along with teaching at the University of Southern California\, he works as a cultural critic-at-large for The Los Angeles Times. Viet lives in LA with his wife and two children. \nThis event is in collaboration with the Visiting Writers Reading Series. \nThe cost of tickets for this program has been generously underwritten by the sponsors of the Blauvelt Speaker Series.  \nThe Blauvelt Speaker Series is funded in part by the generosity of the late Bradford Thomas & Eleanor G.
