History

The Grunin Center—originally known as the Fine Arts Center and later the Arts and Community Center—was built in 1972 on the Ocean County College campus. Over the decades, both its name and programming evolved. By early 2009, the venue required significant upgrades and subsequently closed for several years for renovations.

In 2014, the Grunin Foundation donated $5.75 million to Ocean County College, establishing the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts. Since then, the center has grown into a cultural hub for Ocean County. Over the past decade, it has welcomed an impressive roster of performers, including Sutton Foster, Art Garfunkel, Patti LuPone, Tony Danza, Graham Nash, Judy Collins, Rufus Wainwright, Blues Traveler, and Chris Botti.

In 2025, Ocean County College launched an expansion project for the center. A new lobby is now under construction in front of the existing building. This addition will feature a meeting and reception space in the Marlene & Michael Perlmutter Hall, a new Box Office, and the Wintrode Art Gallery.

The Grunin Foundation, based in Toms River, NJ, is a private family philanthropic fund. It provides holistic support—through funding, capacity building, and coalition building—to organizations that share its vision of an equitable, just, and vibrant Central Jersey Shore.
